Integrating mechanical treatment and biological control to improve field treatment efficiency on invasions

چکیده

Projecting invasion treatment outcomes and determining controlling efficiency under various management strategies have important implications in field management. Different from herbicide usage that may cause environmental pollution nontarget effects on native plants, nonchemical (i.e., mechanical) methods, such as mowing hand weeding, shown great targeted effectiveness invasion. However, an interesting question remains unclear is how to reduce the need for repeated applications of mechanical treatments. One possible approach integrate treatments with biological control agents, which can attack limit spread after being established field. We hypothesize applying methods remove invasive plants while establishing then using agents future regrowth will decrease use To include vegetation dispersal, we developed a spatial modeling framework, paired logistic equation models both resident plant plant, agent, capture dynamics different scenarios. Specifically, examined four factors, initial application location their efficiency, frequency (how often be applied), areal extent treatment. found explicitly showed significantly stronger impacts than did nontargeted whereas higher could compensate drawback untargeted Our results also suggested adding further cooperation lower frequency, but treating larger areas per time, more efficient vice versa. emphasize high continuously requirement maintain population at low level. The model here potentially extended used by managers prioritizing efforts achieve efficiency.

Mechanical-Biological Pre-Treatment

At present in Germany there are 61 plants for Mechanical(-Biological) Treatment (M(B)T) of residual wastes with a total capacity of about 6.4 million tons per year. They can be classified in four process concepts: material stream separation, mechanical-biological stabilization (with a biological drying process), mechanical-physical stabilization (with a thermal drying process) and mechanical(-b...

Effects of nanobubble aeration in oxygen transfer efficiency and sludge production in wastewater biological treatment

Low efficiency of conventional aeration techniques and the excessive production and disposal of sludge are great concerns in biological wastewater treatment systems. The present study aimed to evaluate the active sludge method using batch reactors under continuous operation to determine the efficiency of aeration and sludge production through microbubble and nanobubble aeration. The results ind...

Optimal spatial control of biological invasions

This study examines the spatial nature of optimal bioinvasion control. We develop a spatially explicit two-dimensional model of species spread that allows for differential control across space and time, and we solve for optimal spatial-dynamic control strategies. The qualitative nature of optimal strategies depends in interesting ways on aspects of landscape and invasion geometry. For example, ...
